Musikgarten opened in 1994 in North America when Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge merged her music education background with the experience and input of childhood education specialist, Audrey Sillick. They continued to study the role of music and movement on the development of children, and together they wrote curricula that reflect their combined education and experience.
All children are innately musical and have an inborn ability to sing and move rhythmically. Children communicate effectively with body language long before they can communicate with spoken language. When babies move to musical sounds they are communicating their feelings and perceptions of the world. Developmentally appropriate music activities involve the whole child – the child’s desire for language, the body’s urge to move, the brain’s attention to patterns, the ear’s lead in initiating communication, the voice’s response to sounds, as well as the eye-hand coordination associated with playing musical instruments. Music is a creative experience which involves expression of feelings. Research and experience tell us that the earlier a child is in an environment of active music-making, the more likely that child’s inborn musicality will be awakened and developed.
Repetition is essential to learning – children welcome repetition because it allows them to enjoy the experience again. With each repetition the action becomes smoother and more controlled. Once they have mastered it, they will challenge themselves and begin to explore ways by which they might apply their new-found skill in other situations.
In our weekly Family Music for Babies & Toddlers classes we will delight in the endless energy of your children, their joy in bouncing, rocking, dancing and playing simple instruments with you, and in seeing them develop in this wonderful, musical environment. We are laying the foundation necessary for success in music, regardless of which path your child takes in the future. Research documents that kids today are over-stimulated visually and need purposeful movement and music training now more than ever. We emphasize active, thoughtful participation, not entertainment. We emphasize movement, not visual stimulation. Musikgarten is unique in these respects.
Musikgarten is more than just learning songs. It is designed to enhance your child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development, while building a foundation for future musical proficiency, as well as increasing your child’s curiosity about music. And that’s important for you to know. For your child, it’s all about the pure fun of music and movement shared with you.
